Plant name: Thimble Cactus
Botanical name: Mammillaria gracilis (often sold as Mammillaria vetula ssp. gracilis)

Description

  • A small, clustering Mammillaria that forms dense cushions

  • Individual heads are tiny, finger- or thimble-shaped

  • Covered in very fine white radial spines, giving a soft, fuzzy look

  • Almost no visible central spines

  • Flowers are small, creamy-white to pale yellow, appearing near the crown

  • Extremely prolific offset producer (one of the fastest clumpers)

Origin

  • Mexico

  • Grows naturally in dry, rocky areas with bright light and excellent drainage

Care Guide

Light

  • Bright light to gentle direct sun

  • Morning sun is ideal

  • Too much harsh afternoon sun can yellow or scorch it

Water

  • Water only when soil is fully dry

  • Summer: every 7–12 days (depending on heat)

  • Winter: minimal water

  • Very sensitive to overwatering

Soil

  • Fast-draining cactus mix

  • Best mix: cactus soil + pumice/perlite + coarse sand

Pot

  • Shallow pot with good drainage

  • Crowded pots are fine (it likes to clump)

Fertilizer

  • Optional, very light feeding once a month in growing season

  • Use diluted cactus fertilizer

Propagation

  • Very easy by offsets

  • Just remove a small head, let it dry 2–3 days, then place on dry soil

Common Problems

  • Rot at base: excess water or poor drainage

  • Yellowing: too much direct sun or overwatering

  • Mealybugs: hide between dense offsets—check regularly

Extra Tips (India)

  • Excellent for balconies with bright shade

  • Keep pot slightly raised during monsoon

  • Avoid misting—humidity can cause rot inside clumps
