Astrophytum asterias
Common names: Star Cactus, Sand Dollar Cactus
Form: Flat to slightly domed, spineless cactus with a perfect star shape
Ribs: Usually 8 ribs (sometimes 6–10), broad and smooth
Color: Deep green body with evenly spaced white woolly areoles (dots)
Texture: Velvety look due to fine epidermis
Size: Small, slow-growing; typically 6–10 cm wide
Offsets: Rare; usually grows as a single plant
The absence of spines and the neat white dots make this unmistakably Astrophytum asterias.
Bright light with gentle morning sun
Avoid harsh afternoon sun (can scorch the skin)
Ideal under 50% shade-net or bright indirect light
Water only when soil is completely dry
Summer: every 7–10 days
Winter: once every 3–4 weeks
⚠️ Extremely sensitive to overwatering
Very fast-draining cactus mix is essential:
50–60% pumice / perlite / coarse sand
20–30% garden soil
10–20% compost or cocopeat
Ideal: 20–35°C
Keep dry during cold or humid weather
Protect from heavy monsoon rain
Once a month during active growth
Use low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer (½ strength)
Small pot with excellent drainage
Terracotta pots preferred for airflow
Blooms in late spring–summer
Large yellow flowers with orange/red centers
Flowers appear from the center and are bigger than the plant itself 🌼
Seeds only (does not propagate reliably from cuttings)
Seed-grown plants are slow but long-lived
Rot: Overwatering or poor drainage
