Receiving a new succulent delivery is always exciting. Since we ship our plants bare root (without soil), many customers wonder what to do after receiving them.
Don't worry! This guide will help you pot your succulents correctly and ensure they settle into their new home happily.

Why Are Succulents Shipped Bare Root?
At SucculentsMart, we ship plants bare root to keep them safe during transit.
Shipping with wet soil can lead to:
-
Root rot
-
Fungal growth
-
Damaged roots during transport
Bare-root shipping is a common and safe practice used by succulent growers worldwide.
Step 1: Unbox Your Plants Carefully
As soon as your package arrives:
-
Open the box carefully.
-
Remove all plants gently.
-
Inspect each plant.
Don't Panic If You Notice:
A few fallen leaves
Slightly wrinkled leaves
Minor soil residue around roots
These are completely normal signs of transit stress and usually recover within a few days.
Step 2: Let the Plants Rest
After unboxing, place your succulents in a bright, shaded area for a few hours.
Avoid:
-
Direct harsh sunlight
-
Immediate watering
-
Potting into wet soil
This allows the plants to adjust after transit.
Step 3: Prepare the Right Soil Mix
Succulents need excellent drainage.
Recommended Soil Mix:
-
50% Garden Soil
-
30% Sand
-
20% Compost
Avoid:
Heavy clay soil
Pure compost
Fresh cow dung
The goal is to create a light, airy soil mix that dries quickly.

Step 4: Pot Your Succulents
Choose pots with drainage holes.
Then:
-
Fill the pot with the soil mix.
-
Position the succulent carefully.
-
Cover the roots gently.
-
Lightly press the soil around the plant.
Do not bury leaves or rosettes below the soil surface.

Step 5: Wait Before Watering
This is one of the most important steps.
After potting:
Wait around 24 hours before watering.
This gives roots time to heal and settle.
First Watering
Give the soil a thorough watering until it becomes evenly moist.
After that:
-
Water only when the soil is completely dry.
-
Avoid frequent watering.
Remember:
Overwatering kills more succulents than underwatering.
Step 6: Provide Proper Light
Most succulents prefer:
☀ Bright indirect sunlight
☀ Gentle morning sunlight
Avoid harsh afternoon sun for newly delivered plants during the first few days.
What If Leaves Fall During Transit?
Leaf drop is one of the most common concerns among new succulent owners.
A few fallen leaves are completely normal and can happen because:
-
Plants move during transit
-
Temperature changes
-
Handling stress
As long as the stem and roots are healthy, your succulent will continue growing normally.
